Sightseeing in Munich during ESMO 2018

The The European Society for Medical Oncology Congress takes place this October (19-23) in Munich, Germany. We’ve put up a list with accommodation options you can choose from and also worked on this blog article with what you can do while in Munich. Enjoy!

Visit one of the world’s oldest art galleries

The Alte Pinakothek dates back to 1836 and that makes it one of the oldest galleries in the world. Its Neo-Renaissance design served as model for other galleries that appeared later on in Brussels, Rome and St Petersburg.

Alte_Pinakothek_GO-4

Known to house one of the most famous collections of Old Master paintings, the museum’s name Alte (Old) Pinakothek refers to the time period covered by the collection – from the 14th to the 18th century. The construction of the building was ordered by King Ludwig I to house the Wittelsbach dynasty’s exceptional collection, started by Duke Wilhelm IV back in the 1500s.

The Neue Pinakothek, built in 1981, covers nineteenth-century art, and Pinakothek der Moderne, opened in 2002, exhibits modern art.

What you will see here are around 800 German, French, Dutch, Flemish, Italian and Spanish paintings from the 1200s to the 1800s by famous painters like Peter Paul Rubens, Albrecht Dürer and van Dyck, Leonardo da Vinci, Titian, Hans Baldung Grien, Hieronymous Bosch and Rembrandt.

Take a breath of fresh air at Englischer Garten

Englischer Garten

The Englischer Garten’s size will quickly strike you. Dating back to the 18th century, the park begins on the left bank of the Isar in the north behind the Residenz and just seems to never end. The truth is you’re walking in one of the world’s biggest urban parks – bigger than New York’s Central Park.

You can see the Japanese teahouse added for the Olympics in 1972 and the Chinese Tower based on Kew Gardens’ pagoda and first erected in 1790. Last but not least, you’ll be amazed to find surfing here. The Eisbach River has a strong current, forming a static wave that experienced surfers can ride for up to a minute.

Visit Pinakothek der Moderne

Pinakothek der Moderne

This modern art museum is situated in central Munich’s Kunstareal. It’s sometimes referred to as the Dritte (“third”) Pinakothek after the Old and New.

The museum was inaugurated in September 2002 after almost a decade of construction work. Its galleries are filled with art by the most celebrated names of the last 100 years – artists like Kirchner, Kandinsky, Klee, Franz Marc, Emil Nolde, Francis Bacon, Braque, Otto Dix, Picasso, Magritte, Max Ernst and Joan Miró.

See Munich’s oldest church

St Peter_s Church

St Peter’s Church was first built at the end of the 1100s but destroyed by fire in 1347. It was then rebuilt in Gothic style. Given that many extensions have been added along the years, St Peter’s now has Renaissance and Baroque elements as well.

The high altar boasts a figure of St Peter sculpted by Erasmus Grasser at the turn of the 16th century.
